The exercise is part of the Air Combat Evolution program launched by DARPA.
The 412th Test Wing of the U.S. Air Force successfully completed a dogfight between an artificial intelligence (AI) piloted jet and one piloted by a human at Edwards Air Force Base in California. The exercise was part of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) program called Air Combat Evolution (ACE).
Citing national security, USAF officials have not disclosed who won the dogfight. “Things are progressing as well or faster than we had hoped,” said Lt. Colonel Ryan Hefron, ACE program manager for DARPA.
“The potential for autonomous air-to-air combat has been imaginable for decades, but the reality has remained a distant dream up until now,” stated Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall. “In 2023, the X-62A broke one of the most significant barriers in combat aviation. This is a transformational moment, all made possible by breakthrough accomplishments of the X-62A ACE team.”
The X-62A VISTA (Variable In-flight Simulator Test Aircraft) is an experimental variation of the F-16.
